It’s overwhelming to stand in a store aisle and search the countless beauty products which all promise the same thing. Be it clear skin, anti-aging, complexion clearing-all of them say they will help you achieve the best skin you could ever have. Yet, there is such a discrepancy on the prices that are set for these items, how do you choose the best ones?
Using the idea that you get what you pay for, the cheaper products are filled with things that are actually bad for you. Because there is very little regulation on what can go into a beauty product, some of the products in what you buy can be harmful to your health and do nothing for your skin.
The difference in regulation comes from the way countries regulate themselves. In Canada, items are banned if there is enough proof that they are harmful, this is a risk-based approach. In Europe for example, they’ve adopted a prevention-based system where products are banned as ingredients if they could potentially harm you. This is another reason why we stand behind our exclusive use of Yonka products in my studio.
Here’s a list of items you should avoid when looking for beauty items are things such as parabens, phthalates (sometimes listed and hidden as fragrance, perfume or parfum), formaldehyde (listed as diazolidinyl urea, oxymethylene, methanol and DMDM hydantoin), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, mineral oil, polyethylene glycol, talc, and triclosan.
This is not meant to alarm you, but it’s good to be informed and aware of what we are putting into our bodies via our skin. There are several websites and apps that you can use to investigate the health of your beauty product, click here to read more about that.
