If you have this inflammatory skin condition, you know the struggles that come with it.
Affecting over three million Canadians, rosacea is characterized by excessive redness on the face, most commonly the cheeks. It can also spread to one’s forehead, chin and nose. In extreme situations, rosacea also affects the eyes.
There are several factors which are believed to trigger rosacea. Certain foods such as spicy or thermally hot foods can cause one to flare up.
Sun exposure is another trigger and those who experience rosacea are advised to avoid the sun midday and always use a strong SPF on their face as part of their daily beauty and hygiene routine.
It’s tricky to try and maintain a healthy lifestyle when intensive exercise affects flare-ups too. Temperature extremes where hot or cold weather are experienced can lead to rosacea symptoms.
As with so many things, stress is a rosacea instigator. It’s hard to maintain equilibrium when Life throws things at you, but stress is unfortunately one of the most common triggers associated with rosacea episodes.
Lastly, things you put both on your face and in your body can also affect your skin condition. Medications and cosmetic products can cause irritation.
So, what to do?!
With rosacea, it is always best to seek professional help. Talk to your doctor, dermatologist or skin professional to get them to weigh in on what you should do. Over the counter remedies can make your symptoms work and it is best to be guided by a professional. We can't stress this enough.
Topical treatments that have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents have shown positive results in treating milder cases of rosacea. They come in different forms, gel, cream or lotion.
Oral treatments are available as well in the form of antibiotics or other meds. Lastly, laser therapy and cosmetic surgery may be required to battle one’s rosacea. Laser therapy tackles and treats visible red blood vessels which cause the characteristic redness. Many people have felt this method to be a very effective approach to battling problematic rosacea.
