Dehydrated or Dry? What's the difference?

Updated: Apr 21, 2022

If you use the terms dehydrated or dry interchangeably to describe your skin, we want to correct you.

Here’s the difference.

The fact is, most of us have dehydrated skin, and that is massively dictated by where we live. Alberta’s climate and dry cold weather, our exposure to furnace heat and car heaters does take a toll on our skin. Environmental causes coupled with our lifestyle causes work in tandem to make us put more effort into our skin.

Dry skin is a caused by a lack of nutrition and oils, where as dehydrated skin is a lack of moisture and water. Most oily and acne-prone skin is dehydrated and dehydration can actually contribute and exacerbate the issue. As we age, if we don’t hydrate our skin properly, our skin will appear looser, more saggy, and our lines and wrinkles will be emphasized. No one wants this.

So, drink your water.

A lack of water and moisture hardens the moisture barrier of our skin, and the more it is damaged, the more skin issues we will have. Environmental toxins, bacteria and other irritants are kept out of our systems by our natural moisture barrier and the good things we need are kept in. If this moisture barrier starts to break down, we start to lose our youthful, healthy and flawless complexion. A damaged barrier results in acne, accelerating aging skin, and can lead to rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and more. Let's stop the insanity and hydrate!

Once we solve your skin’s dehydration issues, your skin issues do tend to disappear. That is normally our first line of defence and then we move on to more specific issues because if we cannot treat dehydration correctly, we cannot properly treat other things effectively.

Treating dry and dehydrated skin involved different methods of approach and treating them like synonymous conditions only makes things worse.

Not sure what you have?! That’s where I come in. Let’s sit down and analyze your skin because as you know, your confidence is my business.
